Aru Valley is a small village valley around 12 km from Pahalgam, high above the Lidder river. It is quieter than Betaab Valley and feels more like a mountain village than a tourist spot, with wooden houses, grazing horses and wide views of snow peaks.
What to expect
The road climbs through forest to a broad meadow, with a few homestays, cafes and a modest set of guest houses. On a clear day, the high peaks, including Kolahoi, are visible from the meadow. In summer, the valley is bright with grass and herds; in winter, it is covered in deep snow, and the road may be restricted.
Aru is also a trailhead. The trek to Lidderwat, Kolahoi glacier and the Tarsar and Marsar lakes starts here, usually over several days with a guide. Many travellers simply do a day walk along the stream or up to a nearby viewpoint.
How to visit
Local registered vehicles take visitors from Pahalgam to Aru. The journey takes around 30 to 40 minutes. Most itineraries combine Aru with Betaab Valley and Chandanwari in one day, with a lunch stop. Other options include a homestay night, which gives you the early morning light and a very peaceful evening.
Best time to go
May to June and September to October are the best months, with open skies and mild days. July and August are lush but wet. Winter is cold, with snow, and conditions can limit access.
Practical tips
- Wear layers, sturdy shoes and sun protection.
- Carry your own snacks and water; food options are limited.
- Network coverage can be weak.
- Ponies are available for slopes and children; agree the price first.
- Respect the village: ask before taking photos of people or entering homes.
- If trekking beyond the meadow, use a registered local guide and check weather and permissions.
Staying overnight
A few guest houses and homestays operate in and around the valley, offering simple rooms, home-cooked meals and an early start for walkers. Facilities are basic compared with Pahalgam town, so manage expectations on hot water, heating and phone signal. For most travellers a day visit is enough; for walkers and photographers, a night here gives the quietest light of the trip.
Is it suitable for older travellers and children?
The road and meadow are easy, and Aru works well for a relaxed day. Altitude is around 2,400 metres, so keep a slow pace, drink water and avoid long walks right after arriving. For anything beyond the village, ask us about conditions first.
Fitting Aru into your trip
It sits naturally in a two-night Pahalgam stay, with Betaab Valley the same day. See the Pahalgam guide or the Kashmir family holiday. If you want a homestay or trek plan, tell us your dates.
