Five days is tight for Shimla and Manali, because the road between them takes most of a day. This itinerary is honest about that: it gives Shimla one full day, Manali two, and uses the long drive as a scenic day in the middle.

Who it suits: couples, friends and first-time visitors who want a taste of both. What it leaves out: Dharamshala, Dalhousie and Spiti. For those, see the 7-day itinerary.

Seasonal tweaks: from March to June and September to November the plan is as written. In winter, Solang becomes the snow day, and driving times can lengthen. In July and August, we recommend a different plan because of landslide risk on the highways.

How the days are balanced. Day 1 is a short drive and an evening walk. Day 2 is the full Shimla day. Day 3 is the long drive to Manali. Day 4 is Solang and the Atal Tunnel. Day 5 is departure. If your flight is the next day, add a night in Chandigarh.

Getting around. A private car with driver is the simplest option. Local union taxis are used at Solang. Want a version priced for your dates? See the Shimla Manali tour or ask for a custom plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Himachal?

Five or six days covers Shimla and Manali at an easy pace. Seven to nine days lets you add Dharamshala or Dalhousie. Spiti needs at least seven days on its own, because the roads are slow and the altitude requires gradual acclimatisation. Trying to cover Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala in five days means long days in the car.

Should I choose Shimla or Manali?

Choose Shimla for colonial architecture, easy walks and a gentler climate, especially if you are travelling with elders. Choose Manali for mountain scenery, adventure activities and access to snow points like Solang and, in season, Rohtang. Many travellers combine the two, but the drive between them takes seven to eight hours, so allow two days for that stretch.

Is Himachal safe to visit in the monsoon?

It can be, but with care. July and August bring landslides and road closures, especially on the Chandigarh to Manali highway and in Kullu, Mandi and Lahaul. Authorities issue weather alerts, and we recommend avoiding high valleys and tight schedules in those months. If you travel then, keep flexible dates and follow local advisories.
