Six days is the shortest Ladakh trip we are comfortable recommending, and it requires accepting that you will leave things out. This itinerary uses Leh for acclimatisation and local sights, and Nubra for the dunes and monasteries. It leaves out Pangong, because the lake is at a higher altitude and needs more time in the mountains first.

Who it suits: healthy couples, friends and families with older children who want a short break. What it leaves out: Pangong Tso, Tso Moriri and the western route. For those, see the 8-day itinerary.

Seasonal tweaks: from June to September the plan is as written. In May and October, nights are very cold and some camps close. In winter, the plan changes completely.

How the days are balanced. Day 1 is arrival and rest. Day 2 is gentle sightseeing. Day 3 takes in the monasteries near Leh. Day 4 crosses Khardung La to Nubra. Day 5 returns to Leh. Day 6 is departure. Do not schedule anything strenuous on days 1 and 2.

What each day gives you. The first days are about letting the body settle, the middle about culture, and the crossing about the landscape. Making the most of it. Start early on pass days, keep afternoons slow and drink water throughout. Getting around. Private cars cover all the stages. Want a version priced for your dates? Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Ladakh?

Seven to nine days is a sensible minimum. You need two or three days in Leh just to acclimatise, and then another four to five for Nubra, Pangong and perhaps Tso Moriri. A five-day trip is possible but very tight and leaves little margin for altitude or road delays.

How serious is altitude sickness in Ladakh?

It is the main health risk. Leh is at about 3,500 metres, and passes and lakes go much higher. Ladakh's tourism advisory recommends at least 48 hours of rest on arrival. Drink water, avoid alcohol and sedatives, sleep well, ascend gradually and descend if symptoms worsen. Speak to your doctor about preventive medication before you travel.

What is the best time to visit Ladakh?

June to September is the main season, with open roads, warm days and clear skies. May and October are possible but cold, with some roads closed. Winter, from November to March, is very cold and best for experienced travellers interested in the Chadar trek, snow leopards or festivals. July and August can have rain-related road issues on the approach highways.
