Uttarakhand is one of the easiest Himalayan states for families to visit, with hill stations, forests and rivers a day's drive from Delhi. But hill roads can be tiring for children, hotels vary widely in quality, and some activities have strict age limits. A good family plan accounts for all of this.
What makes a plan family-friendly
- Fewer hotel changes. We use two or three bases, with two nights in each.
- Shorter drives with breaks. Hill road time is planned honestly, with stops for tea, toilets and views.
- Easy sightseeing. A ropeway, a waterfall, a lakeside walk, an evening aarti and a safari.
- Rooms that fit a family. Interconnecting rooms or family suites, checked in advance.
- Realistic activities. Rafting has age and weight limits, and we advise on what is suitable.
- Food. Mild, vegetarian and child-friendly options, planned in advance.
Ideas children enjoy
- A jeep safari at Corbett, looking for elephants, deer and birds.
- The ropeway at Mussoorie or Haridwar.
- A boat ride on Naini Lake.
- Splashing in a shallow stream, with close supervision.
- Floating a flower lamp at the evening aarti.
- Eating pancakes at a hill-station cafe.
Choosing the season
March to June and September to November are the best months. Summer holidays are crowded in the hill stations. The monsoon is not recommended for families, because of landslides and slippery paths. Winter is cold and foggy, but fine for Corbett.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Uttarakhand good for family holidays with children?
Yes, with sensible planning. Mussoorie, Nainital, Rishikesh and Corbett suit most families. Rafting has age and weight limits, and long hill drives can cause motion sickness. We recommend fewer hotel changes, shorter drives and morning departures. Char Dham routes are tiring for young children.
Is it safe to visit Uttarakhand in the monsoon?
It can be done, but it carries real risk. Heavy rain in July and August causes landslides and road closures, especially on the routes to Kedarnath, Badrinath and the Kumaon hills. If you must travel then, choose lower destinations such as Rishikesh and Dehradun, keep dates flexible and follow weather and district alerts.
When is Jim Corbett National Park open?
Most safari zones open in mid-November and close around mid-June for the monsoon, though Jhirna and some buffer areas have stayed open through the rains. Dhikala stays and some zones need advance booking, and rules change each season. We confirm zones and slots before quoting. Tiger sightings are never guaranteed.
