Getting to Goa is simple, but choosing the right arrival point can save you hours. The state has two airports, several railway stations and good road links with Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru. This guide explains each option and who it suits.

By air: Mopa or Dabolim

Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) opened in 2023 in the far north, in Pernem taluka. It is the better choice if you are staying in North Goa, especially Arambol, Morjim, Mandrem, Anjuna or Vagator. To Calangute and Baga the drive is around an hour, depending on traffic.

Dabolim Airport (GOI) lies near Vasco da Gama and is shared with the navy. It is the closer option for Panaji, South Goa and Palolem. It is about 30 minutes from Panaji, around 25 minutes from Colva and an hour to an hour and a half from Palolem.

Many airlines now fly from Mopa, and some international carriers have shifted there. The two airports are around two hours apart by road. Always check the code on your booking, and confirm which airport your hotel transfer will use. Fares can differ, but a cheaper fare to the wrong airport may cost you more in cab fares and time.

By rail: Konkan Railway

Goa sits on the Konkan Railway line between Mumbai and Mangaluru. The main stations are:

  • Madgaon (Margao) Junction (MAO): the main station, best for South Goa, Colva and Palolem.
  • Thivim (THVM): the closest station for North Goa and Mopa.
  • Karmali: convenient for Old Goa and Panaji.
  • Vasco da Gama: near Dabolim.
  • Canacona: useful for Palolem and Agonda.

A Vande Bharat service connects Mumbai with Madgaon, and there are many overnight trains from Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Delhi and other cities. The journey from Mumbai takes about eight to ten hours on the fastest services, and from Delhi it takes a full day. The Konkan Railway runs a revised timetable during the monsoon, so check schedules if you travel between June and October. Trains in peak season sell out well in advance.

By road

Goa is well connected by road, especially from Maharashtra and Karnataka.

  • From Mumbai: about 590 km, usually 10 to 12 hours via NH66.
  • From Pune: about 450 km, 8 to 10 hours via Kolhapur and the Western Ghats.
  • From Bengaluru: about 560 km, 10 to 11 hours.
  • From Hyderabad: about 650 km, 11 to 13 hours.

Sleeper buses run between Goa and major cities and are a budget option, though comfort varies. If you drive, be aware of mountain roads and heavy trucks, avoid night driving where possible and expect traffic in peak season. In the monsoon, landslides and flooding can interrupt routes.

Tips for each type of journey

By air: Book the airport that matches your hotel, and arrive at least two hours before domestic flights. By train: Reserve early, carry snacks and note that some services arrive in the middle of the night. By road: Break long drives with a stop, avoid night driving through the Ghats and check weather updates before leaving.

If you travel in the monsoon

Rain affects every mode of transport. Flights can be delayed or diverted, the Konkan Railway runs a revised timetable and may slow trains in heavy rain, and ghat roads see landslides and fallen trees. Allow a buffer of at least half a day on either side of your trip, avoid tight connections and check train status the day before. Hotels and drivers usually know the road situation best, so ask them before setting out on long drives.

Getting from the airport or station to your hotel

Both airports have prepaid taxi counters and app-based services, and many hotels and resorts arrange pickups. Fares to the coast can seem high compared with other cities, and negotiating at the kerb is unpredictable. Pre-booking a cab with a fixed fare is simpler. Madgaon and Thivim stations have taxi stands, but you should confirm fares before boarding.

Planning arrival and departure

Allow generous time on departure days. Roads between Goa's coast and the airports can be slow in the evening or in peak weeks, and airport queues are long at busy times. If you fly out of Dabolim from North Goa or out of Mopa from South Goa, add extra time, because the distances are large.

Where to go next

Once you know your arrival point, choose your base. See North Goa, South Goa or Palolem and Agonda. For help with transfers, tell us your flight or train details and we will include them in your plan.

Practical tips

  • Check the airport code on your ticket: Mopa (GOX) and Dabolim (GOI) are about two hours apart.
  • Book trains early, particularly for December and January, and check the Konkan Railway's monsoon timetable.
  • Choose your arrival point by where your hotel is, not by fare alone.
  • Pre-book airport transfers to avoid queues and inflated fares.
  • Allow generous time for departure days, as roads and airports are busy in peak season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which airport should I fly into for Goa?

Goa has two. Manohar International Airport at Mopa (GOX) is in the far north and is convenient for North Goa. Dabolim (GOI) is closer to South Goa and Panaji. Several airlines now operate from Mopa, so always check the airport code on your ticket, and note that the two are around two hours apart by road.

Should I book early for Christmas and New Year in Goa?

Yes, as early as you can. The period from about 20 December to 5 January is the busiest of the year, with the highest hotel rates, long queues at popular restaurants and heavy traffic on the coastal roads. Booking two to three months ahead gives a much better choice of stays.

Is it worth going to Goa in the monsoon?

It can be, if you want greenery, waterfalls, quiet roads and lower hotel rates, and do not need beach activities. Most beach shacks are dismantled, water sports and sea swimming are restricted, and heavy rain can interrupt plans. Choose a hotel with a pool, add Ayurveda or heritage days, and keep your expectations realistic.
