This is the road-based classic: you start at Jammu, drive up into the valley, loop through its main hill destinations and return by the same highway. It suits friends, families and small groups travelling by train, who want to see most of Kashmir in a week without flying.
Who it suits
Travellers with seven days, who are comfortable with some long drives, and who prefer a single vehicle and driver for the whole trip. It works well for families with older children, for extended families, and for small groups of friends. It is less suitable for people who find long road journeys tiring; in that case, a Srinagar-to-Srinagar plan saves a full day each way.
How the days flow
Day 1 is the longest: Jammu to Pahalgam is a full day on the highway, through the Jawahar Tunnel and Qazigund. The next five days are the valley itself: Pahalgam, a transfer to Srinagar with a houseboat night, a Srinagar sightseeing day, Sonamarg and Gulmarg as separate excursions, and a lighter day with Doodhpathri and shopping. The seventh day returns to Jammu on the highway.

What the first and last days are really like
The first day is almost entirely on the road: about ten hours with stops, arriving in Pahalgam in the evening. Many groups find it easier if they take an overnight train that reaches Jammu in the morning, so they begin driving fresh. The last day mirrors it in reverse, and the highway can be slow around Ramban and Banihal. Keep a day free before any flight, and carry snacks, water and motion-sickness tablets if anyone needs them.
Things to know
- The Jammu to Srinagar highway can close for landslides or snow. Keep onward flights for the day after your return, not the same evening.
- Hotels are chosen from standard or deluxe categories according to your quote.
- Local sightseeing in Pahalgam, Sonamarg and Gulmarg uses local union cabs and ponies, paid directly.
- Gulmarg Gondola tickets are bought separately and need advance booking in season.
- The houseboat night is a stay experience; ask for room photos and heating details if you travel in cooler months.
Customising
