Route: Srinagar - Gulmarg - Pahalgam - Srinagar
Places covered: Srinagar, Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Mughal Gardens
This plan is designed for families flying into Srinagar. It keeps the pace gentle, limits the number of hotel changes and puts the most memorable outings (Dal Lake, Gulmarg and Pahalgam) into a six-day arc that does not feel like a race.
Who it suits
Parents with children, grandparents travelling with the family, and extended families of up to a dozen people. It works from April to October. In winter we can adapt it, replacing Pahalgam with a Gulmarg night, and we explain what to expect in the snow.
Why Srinagar to Srinagar
Flying into Srinagar saves a full day each way compared with a Jammu road trip, which matters when children are involved. You arrive, settle in and start the first evening with a Shikara ride. The highway journey is replaced by short, comfortable transfers.
The shape of the trip
Four nights are spent in Srinagar, which is the base for the Gulmarg excursion, and one night in Pahalgam. The Pahalgam night is optional; if your family prefers fewer moves, we can keep Srinagar as the base and do Pahalgam as a long day trip, or swap it for Sonamarg.
What a typical day feels like
Breakfast at the hotel at around 8 am, a driver who arrives on time, one main outing with a long lunch break and ponies or a short walk for the children, and back at the hotel by late afternoon. Evenings are kept free for tea, a stroll or a rest. The idea is that nobody should arrive at dinner too tired to eat, and that grandparents and children can both enjoy the same day without negotiating who keeps up.
Practical tips for families
- Carry a small first-aid kit, any regular medicines and children's favourite snacks.
- Warm layers are needed even in summer; mornings and evenings are cool.
- Ponies and local cabs are paid directly; budget some cash.
- Keep the Gondola ride for a clear morning, ideally booked in advance.
- Tell us about dietary needs; vegetarian, Jain and child-friendly meals can be arranged.
Changing the plan
Add a day for Sonamarg or Doodhpathri, convert it to a houseboat stay, or ask for a hotel with a play area. Ask us about interconnecting rooms or two adjacent rooms if you are travelling in a larger family, and about hotels with a bukhari or room heater in the cooler months. Share the ages of your travellers and your dates and we will adjust.
