The Gulmarg Gondola is a two-stage cable car that carries visitors from the meadow up the slope of Apharwat. It is one of the main reasons people visit Gulmarg, particularly in winter, and also one of the biggest sources of disappointment when plans are made without allowing for weather.

How it works

Phase 1 runs from Gulmarg to Kongdoori, a mid-station on the slope with an open snowfield, a small cafe and good views of the meadow below. It takes you above the treeline and is the more reliable part of the ride.

Phase 2 continues from Kongdoori to Apharwat Peak, at close to 4,000 metres. The final station is a vast white bowl with long views over the Pir Panjal and, on a clear day, toward Nanga Parbat. Snow can lie here well into spring. Phase 2 has fewer ticket slots than Phase 1 and is the first to be suspended when wind or visibility drops.

Booking and tickets

Tickets are sold online through the cable car operator, with time slots. In winter, weekends and holidays book out days or weeks ahead, and walk-up options may be limited. Book the phases you actually want, and read the cancellation terms before paying, as refunds for weather closures may be limited. If you use an agent or package, check whether tickets are included; most of ours leave them as a direct cost so you can choose your phase and slot.

Choosing a time

Mornings are best. The queues are shorter, the visibility is usually clearer, and the snow is fresher. Clouds tend to build later in the day, and the upper station can be fully white-out by afternoon. A late-booked slot on a snowy day is a gamble.

Tips for a smooth visit

  • Arrive at the lower station at least 45 minutes before your slot.
  • Dress for the top, not the base: it can be 10 degrees colder at Apharwat.
  • Take sunglasses, gloves and a hat; carry water and a snack.
  • Altitude can make you breathless. Move slowly, and avoid heavy exertion if you feel dizzy.
  • Keep a buffer day in Gulmarg if possible, so one closed day does not cost you the ride.
  • Skiers and snowboarders usually ride the gondola with their gear; ask local operators about equipment hire.

What if the gondola is closed?

Gulmarg still has plenty to do: sledging, a pony ride to Khilanmarg, a walk through the meadow, and the quiet pleasure of watching snow fall over the pine forest. We plan alternatives into every winter itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to book the Gulmarg Gondola in advance?

Yes, in peak season. Tickets are sold online through the cable car operator and popular slots, especially for the second phase, sell out on weekends, holidays and snow days. The ride can also be suspended in bad weather, so we suggest a buffer day in Gulmarg or a flexible slot.

Where can I see snow in Kashmir?

Gulmarg is the most reliable, with snow typically from December to March and good cover in January and February. Sonamarg and Pahalgam also see heavy snow in winter, and Gulmarg's upper gondola station can have snow well into spring. Snowfall is never guaranteed on a particular date, so keep a day of flexibility.
