Kerala suits groups well. A houseboat with several bedrooms, a hill resort with family cottages and a beach with calm water are natural settings for time together. But groups also need more planning: vehicles, rooming, meal times and the pace that lets everyone keep up.
What changes for a group
- Vehicles. From tempo travellers for a dozen people to multiple cars for smaller families. Hill roads limit the size of buses.
- Rooming. Twin, triple and family rooms arranged in advance, with groups kept together where possible.
- Houseboats. Multi-bedroom boats or two boats side by side, depending on group size.
- Meals. Group lunches and dinners at set times, with vegetarian, Jain and special diets arranged.
- Timing. Hill roads and boat schedules are fixed, so lateness has a knock-on effect.
Popular formats
- Short group break. Munnar and a houseboat in three or four days.
- Friends' tour. Munnar, Alleppey and Fort Kochi in five days.
- Extended family. The Classic Kerala route, with more time and a beach.
- Pilgrimage and culture tours. Combining temples, churches and heritage sites.
Tips for group leaders
Confirm headcount early, collect ID details in advance and agree rules on alcohol, noise and behaviour on houseboats. Brief the group on motion sickness and monsoon conditions. Keep a buffer for each day, and decide in advance how to share costs for extras such as boat rides and activities.
A note on safety and behaviour
Groups on houseboats and beaches need a few ground rules. Agree that no one swims alone or after drinking, appoint a person to count heads on boats and make sure everyone wears a life jacket. Respect the crew, keep music at a considerate volume and take your waste with you. Good behaviour keeps the trip enjoyable and keeps your hosts happy to welcome groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I know before booking a houseboat in Alleppey?
Choose a registered, classified boat with a waste-treatment system, confirm whether you want a private or shared boat, and check the timings. Houseboats usually check in around midday and moor before dark. Ask about air-conditioning hours, the meals, the crew and the cabin photos, and avoid very cheap offers that cut corners on safety or hygiene.
Is alcohol available in Kerala?
Alcohol is sold through licensed outlets and served in many hotels and resorts, but rules are stricter than in some states, with dry days and licensing limits. Public drinking is not allowed. Houseboats may or may not serve alcohol, so ask before booking and do not carry your own onto a boat without checking.
How do I travel around Kerala?
A private car with a driver is the most flexible way to connect Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. Trains run along the coast and are good for Kochi, Alleppey and Thiruvananthapuram. Water ferries and boats link backwater towns. Hill roads are slow, so we usually plan three to four hours per leg.
