Route: Kochi - Munnar - Alleppey - Kochi

Places covered: Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey

When you only have a long weekend, Kerala can still deliver. This plan uses the two most distinctive experiences, tea hills and the backwaters, and links them with a short loop that starts and ends at Kochi. It is a compact trip, and we are honest that it involves a lot of driving for four days.

Who it suits

Couples and friends who live in a city with a direct flight to Kochi and want a quick break. It also suits first-time visitors who plan to return for a longer trip. It works best from September to March, and in the monsoon with caution.

How the days flow

Day one is the drive from Kochi to Munnar, about four and a half hours, with a stop on the way. Day two is for Munnar: tea estates, Eravikulam and a viewpoint. Day three takes you to Alleppey for a houseboat night. Day four brings you back to Kochi, about an hour and a half, for your flight.

Honest notes

  • The total driving time is about 11 to 12 hours across four days.
  • The Munnar leg is the long one; we recommend an early start.
  • The houseboat is a night, not a full stay; it is meant as a taste of the backwaters.
  • The trip leaves little time for Fort Kochi or Thekkady.
  • If your flight is early on the last day, consider staying in Kochi the night before, since the houseboat jetty and the airport are about an hour and a half apart.

Making it feel less rushed

Fly into Kochi in the morning, choose a late evening flight on the last day and travel light. Avoid scheduling activities at both ends of the day. If you can add a night, we suggest adding it to Munnar.

Who should choose something different

If you have five or more days, a longer plan such as the Kerala honeymoon or the Classic Kerala tour gives a better balance between driving and rest. If you dislike long drives, consider a plan based in Kochi and Kumarakom only. If you want beach time, this weekend plan will not deliver it.

Customising

Replace the houseboat with a lakeside resort in Kumarakom, add a night in Fort Kochi or switch Munnar for Wayanad (subject to conditions). Tell us your dates and we will tailor the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I know before booking a houseboat in Alleppey?

Choose a registered, classified boat with a waste-treatment system, confirm whether you want a private or shared boat, and check the timings. Houseboats usually check in around midday and moor before dark. Ask about air-conditioning hours, the meals, the crew and the cabin photos, and avoid very cheap offers that cut corners on safety or hygiene.

Is Kerala good for a honeymoon?

It is one of India's most popular honeymoon destinations, with a mix of hills, backwaters and beaches. A typical plan has two nights in Munnar, a night on a houseboat and two nights at a beach or resort. Keep days short, book quiet properties and avoid trying to do too much.

How cold does Munnar get?

Munnar sits at around 1,600 metres, so days are pleasant and nights are cool all year. December to February can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping close to single digits on some nights, and mist or rain is common in the monsoon. Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket whatever the season.

How many days do I need for Kerala?

Six or seven days covers Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and a backwater night without rushing. Five days works if you choose two bases, such as Munnar and Alleppey. Adding the southern beaches at Kovalam or Varkala, or Wayanad, needs eight or nine days, because the road legs are slower than they look on a map.
