Route: Kochi - Munnar - Alleppey - Fort Kochi

Places covered: Kochi, Munnar, Alleppey, Fort Kochi

Kerala is a good place for a friends' trip because it has something for everyone: a cool hill station, a boat to share and a lively historic quarter. This plan covers the three in a loop that starts and ends at Kochi, so there is no backtracking and no complicated transfers.

Who it suits

Groups of six to fifteen friends or relatives, from college friends to extended families. It works from September to March. In the monsoon, expect rain and plan indoor alternatives.

How the days flow

You drive from Kochi to Munnar for two nights, with a tea estate walk, a visit to Eravikulam and an evening around a bonfire if the property allows it. On day three you descend to Alleppey for a houseboat night. On day four you travel to Fort Kochi for two nights, with heritage walks, seafood dinners, Kathakali and the waterfront. Day six is departure.

Group notes

  • Vehicle. A tempo traveller or two cars, depending on size. Hill roads limit larger buses.
  • Houseboat. A multi-bedroom boat or two boats side by side. Alcohol policies vary by boat.
  • Rooms. Triple and quad rooms in Munnar and Kochi, arranged in advance.
  • Safety. Life jackets on boats, caution on hill roads and care near the sea.
  • Costs. Larger groups share transport and houseboat costs, which lowers the per-person price.

Tips for the group

Agree on a daily meeting time, appoint a group leader and keep a shared plan for evenings. Keep the schedule loose enough for tired people to rest. If anyone is prone to motion sickness, mention it before the Munnar drive.

A realistic view of the pace

The first day is easy, with a short drive and a free evening. The second and third days involve the hill drive and a long day on the water, so we keep activities light and meals unhurried. The fourth day is a quiet one in Fort Kochi, where you can walk, shop and rest. We find that groups enjoy the trip most when the schedule leaves room for conversation, naps and unplanned detours.

Before departure, we send a short briefing on what to wear, what to carry and how houseboat etiquette works, so that everyone arrives prepared.

Customising

Add a night, swap Fort Kochi for Thekkady, include a beach at the end or convert to a family plan. Share your group size and dates and we will price the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I know before booking a houseboat in Alleppey?

Choose a registered, classified boat with a waste-treatment system, confirm whether you want a private or shared boat, and check the timings. Houseboats usually check in around midday and moor before dark. Ask about air-conditioning hours, the meals, the crew and the cabin photos, and avoid very cheap offers that cut corners on safety or hygiene.

Is alcohol available in Kerala?

Alcohol is sold through licensed outlets and served in many hotels and resorts, but rules are stricter than in some states, with dry days and licensing limits. Public drinking is not allowed. Houseboats may or may not serve alcohol, so ask before booking and do not carry your own onto a boat without checking.

How do I travel around Kerala?

A private car with a driver is the most flexible way to connect Kochi, Munnar, Thekkady and Alleppey. Trains run along the coast and are good for Kochi, Alleppey and Thiruvananthapuram. Water ferries and boats link backwater towns. Hill roads are slow, so we usually plan three to four hours per leg.
