Route: Haridwar - Guptkashi - Kedarnath - Joshimath - Badrinath - Rudraprayag - Rishikesh
Places covered: Haridwar, Guptkashi, Kedarnath, Joshimath, Badrinath, Mana, Rudraprayag, Rishikesh
This plan covers Kedarnath and Badrinath in a pace that allows for weather, fatigue and the realities of mountain roads. It begins and ends in Haridwar and Rishikesh, so you travel on familiar ground at the start and finish, and it spends two nights at each of Guptkashi and Joshimath to avoid rushing.
Who it suits
Pilgrims who are reasonably fit and prepared for long drives, and family groups with older members who are comfortable with pony or helicopter options. It works in the Char Dham season, usually May to June and September to October. It is not recommended in the heart of the monsoon.
How the days flow
You arrive in Haridwar, attend the aarti and rest. On day two, you drive to Guptkashi, about eight to nine hours. On day three, you make the journey to Kedarnath, by trek, pony or helicopter, depending on registration, weather and health, and return to Guptkashi that night. Day four takes you towards Joshimath, via Chopta or Chamoli. On day five, you visit Badrinath and Mana and return to Joshimath. Day six is a long drive back to Rudraprayag. Day seven brings you to Rishikesh and the Ganga aarti. Day eight is departure.
Registration and rules
You must register on the Uttarakhand government's portal before the journey, and helicopter bookings need completed registration. We guide you through the process and check the current rules, fees and slots close to your dates. Some shrines restrict entry to inner areas to Hindus. Please carry original ID matching your registration.
The honest part
- Kedarnath is demanding. The walk from Gaurikund is about 16 km at over 3,500 metres. Ponies and helicopters help, but they are limited and weather-dependent.
- Roads are long. Drive times of eight to ten hours are common, and landslides can add delays.
- Facilities are simple. Expect basic hotels and vegetarian food near the shrines.
- Altitude. Mild symptoms are common. Rest, hydration and slow pacing are essential.
- Weather. Rain can pause routes. We keep contingency days, and sometimes the plan changes.
- Joshimath. Land subsidence has affected parts of the town. We check the status of our hotels before confirming.
What to carry
Rain gear, warm layers, sturdy shoes, a torch, sunscreen, medicines, snacks, ID, registration printouts and cash. Keep luggage light for the trek.
Customising
Add a night at Kedarnath, include Gangotri and Yamunotri for the full Char Dham in a longer plan, or choose a helicopter option. Tell us your dates, ages and health notes and we will adapt the plan.
