Route: Leh - Nubra Valley - Leh

Places covered: Leh, Shey, Thiksey Monastery, Hall of Fame, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Hunder, Diskit

This plan is designed so that most of the stay is below 3,600 metres, which makes it kinder for children and older relatives. It spends three nights in Leh to settle in, two in Nubra for the dunes and monasteries, and one more night in Leh before departure. It leaves out Pangong by default, and we explain why.

Who it suits

Families with children from about eight or ten years, and multi-generational groups in good health. It works from June to September. If anyone in your group has a heart, lung or blood-pressure condition, please talk to a doctor before booking, and share the advice with us.

How the days flow

On arrival, everyone rests in Leh. The second day includes a short visit to the palace and the bazaar. On the third day, you see Shey, Thiksey and the Hall of Fame, an Army museum that children often like. On day four, you cross Khardung La to Nubra, spending a short time at the top. Days four and five include the Hunder dunes with a camel ride, Diskit Monastery and a village walk. On day six, you drive back to Leh. Day seven is departure.

Why we leave out Pangong

Pangong Tso is beautiful, but it is at about 4,350 metres, the camp is basic and the night can be hard on young children and older people. If everyone is healthy, well-acclimatised and a doctor has no concern, we can add it. We would rather have you enjoy a lower plan than spend a night worrying.

Family notes

  • Altitude. Watch for headaches, vomiting, unusual tiredness, breathlessness or confusion. Tell us at once, and we will rest or descend.
  • Food. Vegetarian options are easy, and Leh has good bakeries. Camps serve simple, mild meals.
  • Heat and sun. UV is strong. Pack sunscreen, hats and sunglasses.
  • Cold. Nights are cold, even in summer. Bring layers.
  • Bathrooms on the road. Facilities are basic, so we plan stops carefully.
  • Medical. Carry basic medicines. Pharmacies exist in Leh but not on the way.

What children usually enjoy

The camel ride, the monks, the tiny villages with apricot trees, the clear night sky and the mini-stops for tea and momos. We aim for one main activity a day, with long breaks.

Customising

Add a night in Leh, include the western route, or add Pangong if the whole group is ready. Share the ages of your travellers and we will adapt the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ladakh suitable for children and senior travellers?

It can be, with great care. Young children and elderly relatives are more vulnerable to altitude sickness, and Pangong and Tso Moriri are very high. We usually recommend a slower plan with extra rest days in Leh, a lower-altitude Nubra stay and a doctor's advice. Some travellers decide Ladakh is not right for their family.

How serious is altitude sickness in Ladakh?

It is the main health risk. Leh is at about 3,500 metres, and passes and lakes go much higher. Ladakh's tourism advisory recommends at least 48 hours of rest on arrival. Drink water, avoid alcohol and sedatives, sleep well, ascend gradually and descend if symptoms worsen. Speak to your doctor about preventive medication before you travel.

What food is available in Ladakh?

Expect thukpa, momos, skyu (a local pasta stew), tingmo, butter tea and a good choice of Indian and continental dishes in Leh. Vegetarians eat fine. Away from Leh, meals in camps and homestays are simple. Fresh apricots, seabuckthorn juice and local bread are specialties. Bottled water is available, and carry snacks on long drives.

How many days do I need for Ladakh?

Seven to nine days is a sensible minimum. You need two or three days in Leh just to acclimatise, and then another four to five for Nubra, Pangong and perhaps Tso Moriri. A five-day trip is possible but very tight and leaves little margin for altitude or road delays.
