Route: Jammu - Katra - Patnitop - Srinagar - Gulmarg - Pahalgam - Srinagar

Places covered: Jammu, Katra, Vaishno Devi, Patnitop, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam

Many families want both: the yatra to Vaishno Devi and a few days in Kashmir. This plan joins the two in a single route that does not backtrack. You start at Jammu, spend two nights at Katra for the yatra, break the road at Patnitop and then enjoy the Valley before flying out of Srinagar.

Who it suits

Families, couples and mixed-age groups for whom the pilgrimage is part of the plan. The route is long, but the stages are balanced: the yatra day is followed by a rest day, and the highway is split by a stop at Patnitop.

How the stages work

Katra (two nights). The first night is for arrival and registration, the second recovers after the yatra. You walk or choose ponies, a palanquin, battery cars or helicopter, according to age and fitness. Registration is done through the Shrine Board, and helicopter bookings should only be made through its official channels.

Patnitop (one night). A cool hill stop that breaks the road to Srinagar.

Srinagar and the hills (five nights). Srinagar as the base, Gulmarg as a day trip, and a night in Pahalgam.

Notes for the yatra

The yatra requires registration and photo ID for every pilgrim. Weather, queues and festival periods can change timing. The elderly and young children should plan the ascent with rest stops, and we help match the mode of travel to your group.

Since June 2025, a Vande Bharat service has linked Katra and Srinagar, so rail is an alternative for part of the journey; check IRCTC for timetables.

How demanding is it?

Physically, the yatra day is the hardest, with a long walk or a combination of walking and transport, and then a night of recovery. The highway days are long but not strenuous. If you have knee or heart conditions, talk to your doctor before the yatra and let us know so that we can plan for ponies, palanquins or the helicopter option. Children can complete the walk with breaks, but many families choose a pony for part of the way.

Customising

Swap the Pahalgam night for Sonamarg, add a houseboat night or reverse the route to start in Srinagar and end at Jammu. If your group includes elders, we can shorten the walking and add a rest day in Katra. Tell us your priorities and we will plan the sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kashmir suitable for senior travellers and young children?

Yes, with a slower pace. Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg are accessible by road, and ponies or the gondola help on steeper stretches. Altitude is moderate at 1,600 to 2,800 metres, but carry regular medicines, avoid packing three hill towns into three days, and keep winter plans conservative.

Should I start my Kashmir trip from Jammu or Srinagar?

Fly into Srinagar if you have five days or fewer; you save a full day of road travel. Start from Jammu if you are travelling by train, want to combine Vaishno Devi with Kashmir, or enjoy road journeys. The Jammu to Srinagar drive takes most of a day.

Are roads open to Sonamarg and Gulmarg in winter?

Usually yes, with delays. The Sonamarg tunnel, opened in January 2025, keeps the approach to Sonamarg open through most of winter, though heavy snow can still close roads for hours or days. The road to Gulmarg is cleared quickly but may need snow chains. Always keep one buffer day on winter trips.

What are local union cabs and why are they not included?

In Pahalgam, Sonamarg and parts of Gulmarg, local sightseeing is done only by locally registered taxis and ponies, and outside vehicles are not permitted on those routes. Those charges are usually paid directly on the spot, so your package covers the journey to the town while these local legs stay separate. We list this clearly in every quote.
