Solang Valley is the playground of Manali. About 14 km up the Beas valley, it is a wide, green meadow in summer and a white bowl of snow in winter, with glaciated peaks on the horizon. It is the place people go for paragliding, zorbing, ropeway rides and, in season, skiing and snow play.
What it is like
In summer, Solang is a broad pasture with a few shops, food stalls and activity operators, surrounded by pine forest and snow peaks. In winter, it fills with visitors who come to play in the snow, and the stalls and operators expand. The valley is more commercial than remote, but the setting is striking, and the activities are popular with families and groups.
What to do
- Paragliding. Tandem flights over the valley with licensed pilots. A short flight takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Wind and weather determine whether it can happen.
- Ropeway. A cable car takes visitors up the slope for views and a snowy environment in winter.
- Snow activities. Sledging, snow scooters, snowballs and walks.
- Skiing. Beginner lessons and equipment hire are available in winter for those who want to try.
- Zorbing and ATV rides. Seasonal amusements with variable standards.
- Walks and photography. Early mornings are beautiful.
Safety and operators
Adventure activities carry real risks. Choose companies with registration, trained instructors, proper equipment and insurance. Do not accept discounts that sound too good. For paragliding, check the pilot's licence, the condition of the equipment and the weather. Follow instructions, and be prepared to cancel if conditions are poor. For snow activities, do not go beyond marked areas, and be aware of avalanche risk in the higher slopes.
Local taxis and access
Solang is reached by local taxis run by unions, and outside vehicles may not be allowed beyond certain points. Rates are posted and paid directly. In heavy snow, the road can be blocked, and vehicles with chains may be required. Plan to start early and keep a buffer.
Best time to visit
December to February for snow, with January and February the most reliable. March to June for green views, adventure activities and pleasant weather. September to November for clear skies and quiet. July and August have rain and fog.
Practical tips
- Dress in waterproof layers, gloves and boots in winter.
- Bring sunglasses and sunscreen; snow glare is strong.
- Rent gear from reputable shops, and check the fit.
- Keep cash for local costs, since card machines are unreliable.
- Carry water and snacks; prices in the valley are high.
- Take care with children near ropeways and slopes.
- Leave early to avoid traffic jams on the return.
Who it suits
It suits families, couples and adventure seekers. If you prefer a quiet setting, go early or choose Naggar or a village stay instead.
