Route: Chandigarh - Shimla - Manali - Dharamshala - Pathankot
Places covered: Shimla, Kufri, Manali, Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel, Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Triund
This plan stitches together three of Himachal's best-known destinations in a single line that avoids backtracking. It starts at Chandigarh, moves through Shimla and Manali and ends in Dharamshala, with a drop at Pathankot. It is a bigger trip than the Shimla Manali tour, so we are candid about the driving involved.
Who it suits
Families, groups of friends and travellers who enjoy road journeys. It works from March to June and September to November. In July and August, we suggest a different plan or a shorter one, because of the monsoon. In winter, some sections are cold and icy.
How the days flow
You begin in Shimla with two nights, then drive to Manali for three nights, with Solang and the Atal Tunnel. Day six brings the long drive to Dharamshala for three nights, including McLeod Ganj, the Dalai Lama Temple and an optional Triund trek. The last day is a transfer to Pathankot for onward travel.
The honest part
The Shimla to Manali drive takes seven to eight hours, and Manali to Dharamshala takes eight to nine. These are two long days back to back in the middle of the trip. We balance them by placing sightseeing in the cooler hours, giving you rest days in Manali and Dharamshala and starting early. If you prefer fewer long drives, we suggest dropping Dharamshala and choosing the Shimla Manali tour.
Things to know
- The Kalka to Shimla toy train can be added as an option.
- Triund is a day hike that needs reasonable fitness and good weather.
- Local union taxis are used in Manali and Dharamshala for some sightseeing.
- Hotels in McLeod Ganj are in steep lanes, and cars may not reach the door.
- Winter nights are cold, and some roads may be icy.
Who might prefer a different plan
If you want a shorter, easier trip, the Shimla Manali tour is a better fit. If your group includes young children or elders, the two long drive days may be too much, and we would suggest splitting the route or dropping Dharamshala. If you are interested in culture and quiet, the Dalhousie and Dharamshala plan has shorter legs.
What a rest day looks like
Rest days in Manali and Dharamshala are deliberately light. Sleep in, have a late breakfast, wander a market or sit in a cafe. Some travellers use the Dharamshala rest day for the Triund hike, but you can easily skip it and let your body recover. Planning these days is the difference between a trip that feels like a holiday and one that feels like a marathon.
Customising
Replace Dharamshala with Dalhousie, add Amritsar at the end, include Kasol or extend to Spiti. Tell us what you would like and we will price it.
