Rohtang Pass, at about 3,978 metres, is the gateway between the Kullu valley and the high valleys of Lahaul and Spiti. For generations, it was the only route across, and travellers crossed it with caution. Since the opening of the Atal Tunnel in 2020, Lahaul is reachable all year round, but Rohtang remains a popular excursion for snow, views and the sense of standing on a high Himalayan pass.
The Rohtang experience
The road climbs from Manali through forests and open slopes, with hairpin bends and views of the Beas valley. Near the top, snow lies in all but the hottest months. The pass offers a wide open view of peaks and glaciers, with stalls selling tea, snacks and hire of snow gear. It is cold and windy even in summer, and the altitude can cause headaches in sensitive people. A day trip takes the better part of a day, depending on traffic.
Permits and rules
To limit congestion and protect the environment, vehicles going to Rohtang need a permit. Key points:
- Permits are booked online on the official Himachal Pradesh government portal, and you should avoid agents that add large service fees.
- Daily numbers are capped, and slots can sell out in peak season.
- The pass is closed on Tuesdays for maintenance.
- Documents such as photo ID and vehicle details are checked, and a printout may be required.
- Local taxis are widely used, and fares are fixed by unions.
Rules, fees and quotas change, so we confirm current details before including Rohtang in any plan.
Season
Rohtang opens when the Border Roads Organisation clears snow, usually around mid-May, and closes with the first heavy snow in late October or November. Weather can close it at short notice, with rain or snowfall. In winter, the road is closed to tourists.
The Atal Tunnel
The Atal Tunnel is a 9-km road tunnel under the Pir Panjal range at over 3,000 metres, one of the world's longest high-altitude road tunnels. It connects Solang Valley with Sissu in Lahaul, cutting the journey time by hours and keeping the route open in winter. It opened in October 2020.
For tourists, the tunnel makes Sissu, Gondhla and Keylong accessible in a day. Sissu has a waterfall and meadow, and the Lahaul valley has a dry, dramatic landscape. The tunnel has speed limits, and stopping inside is not allowed.
Rohtang or the tunnel?
If you want snow and the sense of a pass, Rohtang is the classic. If you want to see Lahaul's scenery without permit stress, the tunnel route is simpler. Many travellers now choose the tunnel and Sissu, then add Solang. We can explain which suits your dates.
Safety and altitude
- Rohtang is above 3,900 metres; ascend slowly and avoid heavy exertion.
- Carry warm clothes, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Do not wander off the road or onto snow slopes without a guide.
- Roads can be icy and have steep drops; use experienced drivers.
- Check weather and road conditions before leaving.
Practical tips
- Start early to avoid queues and afternoon clouds.
- Wear waterproof boots and layers.
- Rent gear only from reputable stalls.
- Carry water, snacks and cash.
- Keep small children warm and monitored.
