Seven days allows a proper loop of the three most popular Himachal bases, but it leaves little spare time. This plan runs from Chandigarh through Shimla and Manali to Dharamshala, with one night in each of two places and two in the third.

Who it suits: travellers who enjoy road journeys, families with older children and groups of friends. Pace: two long drive days and four lighter ones. Seasonal tweaks: from March to June and September to November the plan is as written. In winter, allow extra time on the road. In July and August, we usually suggest a shorter plan.

Making it easier. Start early, keep afternoons free and avoid scheduling anything strenuous on drive days. If you dislike long drives, drop Dharamshala and choose the 5-day itinerary or consider the quieter Dalhousie and Dharamshala plan.

What the days have in common. Each morning is for the main sight while the air is cool, and each afternoon leaves room to rest or wander. The two long drive days are separated by a full day in Manali so that nobody is on the road for two days running. This is the route of our Himachal circuit, shortened by a day. For a slower pace, ask us to remove a stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Himachal?

Five or six days covers Shimla and Manali at an easy pace. Seven to nine days lets you add Dharamshala or Dalhousie. Spiti needs at least seven days on its own, because the roads are slow and the altitude requires gradual acclimatisation. Trying to cover Shimla, Manali and Dharamshala in five days means long days in the car.

Is Himachal safe to visit in the monsoon?

It can be, but with care. July and August bring landslides and road closures, especially on the Chandigarh to Manali highway and in Kullu, Mandi and Lahaul. Authorities issue weather alerts, and we recommend avoiding high valleys and tight schedules in those months. If you travel then, keep flexible dates and follow local advisories.

Is Himachal suitable for children and senior travellers?

Yes, with the right choices. Shimla, Dalhousie and Dharamshala are gentle bases. Manali works well if you skip high-altitude excursions with young children or elders. The winding roads can cause motion sickness, so break journeys, travel with tablets and avoid very long driving days.
