Colva is the beach most visitors to South Goa head for first. It is long, flat and lively, with a row of shacks, a few small hotels and a busy local market behind the sand. It is popular with Indian families, and has the feel of a traditional beach holiday, with chairs, cold drinks, snack stalls and children playing in the surf.
What to expect
The beach stretches for several kilometres, with a broad stretch of sand and gentle waves for much of the year. Water sports are less common than in the north, but you may find parasailing and boat rides in season. The beach road is lined with restaurants and souvenir shops, and the evening crowd is local and relaxed.
At Colva's centre, the whitewashed Church of Our Lady of Mercy is one of the area's landmarks, and the surrounding village retains a Goan feel despite the tourism.
What to do
- Swim and sunbathe early. The beach is quietest before 9 am.
- Eat at a shack. Fish, prawn curry and Goan thalis are standard.
- Visit the church and the village lanes. A short walk shows a calmer side of Colva.
- Shop for souvenirs. Clothing, handicrafts and snacks are on offer.
- Take a day trip. Margao's market and several heritage houses are close.
Tips for a better visit
Go in the morning for the quietest beach and the best light, and stay for a late lunch at a shack. The southern end near Benaulim is calmer than the central stretch. Keep small notes for vendors, and carry a light cover-up for the walk to the church.
Safety and comfort
Colva has lifeguards in the open season, with flags to mark safe swimming areas. Currents can be strong after rough weather. Keep an eye on children and avoid swimming after drinking. Hawkers and touts are common but not aggressive; a polite refusal is enough.
How it compares
Colva is busier and more commercial than Benaulim, which lies just south, and much more crowded than Palolem or Agonda. It suits families, groups and visitors who want things to do without a long journey.
When to go
November to February is the main season. In March to May the weather is hot and the beach quieter. The monsoon brings rough seas, closures and heavy rain.
