Darjeeling
The tea town on a ridge at about 2,000 metres: sunrise over Kanchenjunga, the Himalayan Railway, tea estates, monasteries and old colonial streets.

Kalimpong
A quieter hill town at about 1,250 metres, known for monasteries, flower nurseries, handmade cheese, old schools and views of the Teesta.

Gangtok
Sikkim's capital at about 1,650 metres: the pedestrian MG Marg, monasteries, ropeway, cafes and the base for Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La.

Tsomgo Lake and Nathu La
High-altitude excursions from Gangtok: a glacial lake near 3,800 metres and a border pass above 4,300 metres, both permit-dependent and weather-sensitive.

Pelling and Yuksom
West Sikkim's quiet side: Kanchenjunga views, the old Pemayangtse monastery, Khecheopalri Lake, Rabdentse ruins and the historic capital at Yuksom.

North Sikkim, Lachung and Yumthang
Alpine valleys, rhododendron sanctuaries, snow and sacred lakes, reached by long mountain roads and permits that change with the season.
