Route: Delhi - Jaipur - Ranthambore - Agra - Delhi

Places covered: Delhi, Jaipur, Amer Fort, Ranthambore, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, Taj Mahal

This plan is designed for families with children, built around three things children usually enjoy: a fort, a safari and a monument as famous as the Taj Mahal. It keeps drives short, uses hotels with pools and avoids hotel changes every night, so the holiday feels like a holiday.

Who it suits

Families with children from about six, and multi-generational groups who want a mix of culture and nature. It works from October to March. In summer, safaris are hot and sightseeing is hard on children, so we recommend winter.

How the days flow

After arrival in Delhi, you drive to Jaipur for two nights: Amer Fort, the City Palace and a puppet or craft experience. The next leg is a drive to Ranthambore, where you stay for two nights with two safaris, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, plus a visit to the fort. From Ranthambore you travel to Agra for two nights, with Fatehpur Sikri on the way and the Taj Mahal at sunrise. The final day returns to Delhi.

Family notes

  • Safaris. Early morning safaris are cold in winter, so we suggest warm layers. Most lodges allow children on safaris, but age limits vary by operator, so we check.
  • Pace. Drives range from three to five hours. We schedule the longest drive after a rest day.
  • Hotels. We choose properties with pools, family rooms and children's menus.
  • Food. Vegetarian, Jain and child-friendly meals can be arranged.
  • Medicines. Carry regular medicines and a basic first-aid kit.

Why this route suits families

Each stage gives children something different to enjoy: forts and elephants-free viewpoints in Jaipur, wildlife in Ranthambore and the Taj Mahal in Agra. Drives are shorter than on the full Rajasthan circuit, and the hotels have pools. Teenagers often like the safaris and the photographs at the Taj, while younger children enjoy the monkeys, peacocks and open spaces at the lodge.

What to expect from the safaris

You may or may not see a tiger. Children often enjoy spotting deer, peacocks, monkeys and crocodiles, and the drive through the forest is an experience in itself. Two safaris improve the chance of a good sighting.

Customising

Add a night in Delhi, extend to Udaipur by flight or swap Agra for a second Jaipur night. Share the ages of your travellers and we will adapt the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Rajasthan suitable for children and senior travellers?

Yes, with a measured pace. Forts involve stairs and uneven stone, so choose one or two highlights per day, travel in the cooler months and keep drives under five hours when you can. Heritage hotels with lifts or ground-floor rooms suit seniors, and many forts have ramps or vehicle access to the upper levels.

Will I see a tiger at Ranthambore?

It is possible but never guaranteed. Ranthambore is one of the better places in India to see tigers in the wild, but sightings depend on the zone, the season and luck. Booking several safaris, preferring winter and spring, and choosing an experienced naturalist all improve the odds. Safaris are closed in the monsoon.

Can I visit Rajasthan in summer?

You can, but it is hard. Daytime temperatures in May and June regularly pass 40 degrees, and forts and open-air sites become uncomfortable by late morning. If you must travel then, plan sightseeing before 10 am and after 4 pm, stay at hotels with a pool and consider Udaipur or Mount Abu, which are slightly cooler.

Is Rajasthan safe, and what scams should I watch for?

Rajasthan is a well-visited destination, and most trips are trouble-free. The common issues are touts at stations, inflated taxi fares, pushy shop owners and the so-called gem scam, where tourists are persuaded to buy stones for resale abroad. Use prepaid taxis, book through registered operators and never agree to a stone-buying scheme.
