Seven days allows a fuller loop through the region without rushing, with time to rest between drives. This plan runs from Darjeeling to Kalimpong to Gangtok, with a Tsomgo excursion and a gentle final day. It leaves out Pelling and North Sikkim, which each need extra days.

Who it suits: travellers who want variety, families with older children and groups of friends. Pace: three drive days and four lighter days. Seasonal tweaks: from March to May and October to early December the plan is as written. In winter, expect cold nights. In the monsoon, we recommend a different plan.

The shape of the week. The first days are about Darjeeling's views and heritage, the middle days about Kalimpong's quiet and monasteries, and the last days about Gangtok's culture and high-altitude excursion. Making it easier. Start early on drive days and plan rest in the afternoons. If you want a calmer trip, drop Kalimpong and add a night in Gangtok. If you want a longer trip, add Pelling.

Getting around. A private car handles all transfers, so you rarely need to arrange anything yourself. This route combines our classic tour and family holiday. For a slower pace, ask us to remove a stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days do I need for Darjeeling and Sikkim?

Six to eight days is a comfortable minimum for Darjeeling and Gangtok with a day trip to Tsomgo Lake. Add two days for Pelling and two or three for North Sikkim. Hill roads are slow, so five days leaves little time to enjoy each place, and trying to see everything in four is mostly driving.

Do I need a permit for Sikkim?

Requirements depend on nationality and destination. Indian visitors usually need Protected Area Permits for Tsomgo Lake, Nathu La and North Sikkim, while foreign nationals face additional rules and some places are closed to them. Rules have changed several times, so we confirm the current position before your trip and arrange the paperwork where it applies.

Are the roads in Sikkim safe?

Roads are narrow and climb through steep, landslide-prone slopes, and the NH-10 stretch from Siliguri to Gangtok along the Teesta river is closed from time to time after rain. Experienced local drivers matter a great deal. We avoid night driving, leave early in the day and keep spare days in the plan.
